Anna Maria D'Oyly

Anna Maria D'Oyly was buried in the north cloister of Westminster Abbey on 17th July 1788 aged 41. No gravestone inscription remains and she has no memorial.

She was the daughter and heir of a rich brewer of Westminster, Jonathan Black, and his wife Elizabeth (heir of George Burnell of Yorkshire). She married at Gretna Green in 1767 Edward D'Oyly, only surviving son of Thomas of Gray's Inn in London (younger brother of the Reverend Sir Hadley D'Oyly 5th Baronet of Shottisham). The marriage was repeated at St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey on 5th October 1768. Edward died in Sumatra about 1770. She died at her house in Palace Yard, Westminster leaving an only son Edward who eventually succeeded to the estates of both his grandfathers.
