Bass Singer

St Margaret’s Church is looking to appoint a bass singer to its choir, offering an exciting opportunity to sing with one of London’s top professional church choirs. The church is part of the foundation of Westminster Abbey, and the choir sings at a Choral Eucharist every Sunday morning, (10am rehearsal for an 11am service), and at occasional other services such as Good Friday and Christmas Day. St Margaret’s also has a historic link with the Houses of Parliament, and the range of special services at which the choir sings include memorial services for prominent Parliamentarians. The choir also occasionally provides the music for weddings and other services held in the Undercroft Chapel of the Houses of Parliament, and from time to time sings in Westminster Abbey in the absence of the Abbey Choir.

The Director of Music is looking to appoint a professional singer to the choir who has:
• excellent sight-reading ability
• the vocal versatility and technique to cope with a demanding range of repertoire from all periods
• good knowledge of the repertoire of the western church
• knowledge and experience of singing Anglican chant
• experience as both a soloist and ensemble singer
• is comfortable with the liturgy of the Anglican church
Fees
Current fees are:
• £68.50 for Sunday services
• £99 for special services, including Good Friday and Christmas Eve and Day
Attendance
We operate a pool system. The choir’s usual singing strength on a Sunday is 10 (4S, 2A, 2T, 2B). There are 3 regular basses, and each is asked for his availability. Services are then shared out as equitably as possible, within the constraints of people’s availability. There is no formal attendance rule, but it is expected that singers will make themselves available for a large proportion of services.
Application
Please send a CV and brief covering letter, outlining how singing at St Margaret’s would fit into your other professional work, to:
Suzanne Wilson, Music Secretary, St Margaret’s Church, Westminster Abbey
The Chapter Office, 20 Dean’s Yard, London SW1P 3PA
Or by e-mail [email protected]

Auditions are scheduled for 28 and 30 October.
Any offer of appointment will be subject to receipt of satisfactory references, a DBS check and a probationary period of six months.
