Head - Westminster Abbey Choir School

Westminster Abbey Choir School offers a preparatory school boarding education, tailored precisely to the needs of choristers who sing in Westminster Abbey Choir. Westminster Abbey is internationally known for the dignity and magnificence of the great State occasions of this country. For the last one hundred years or so, the choristers have been separately educated in the Westminster Abbey Choir School.

Closing date Monday, 27th February 2023 at 12.00 PM

Head - Required preferably from September 2023

The School has flourished under the exceptional leadership of the previous Head, Mr Peter Roberts, who has now resigned.  Therefore, the Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr David Hoyle, Chair of Governors and fellow Governors will be looking for a truly remarkable educator who understands the value of the life-changing musical opportunities, the huge importance of the very best in pastoral care, the special qualities needed to prepare the boys for some of the most prestigious senior schools in the country and who will move the school into its next phase.

With a unique location in Dean’s Yard by Westminster Abbey, the present Choir School opened in 1918, although choristers (who first started singing in the Abbey in the 14th century) have been educated hereabouts since Elizabethan times. Living and working in a community with an internationally renowned reputation for excellence, within such a magnificent setting, will demand someone who is exceptional.

The 30 pupils ranging from Year 4 to Year 8 not only benefit from an exceptional musical education in a Christian environment and a happy and supportive place in which to live but also receive a broad academic grounding. This enables pupils to go on to senior school as “confident, well-balanced individuals, able to take their places in society as good citizens and to form strong enduring relationships with others” ISI Inspection, 2015.

The successful applicant will be a committed Christian who understands the complex needs of the whole community. They will lead by example and have an innate understanding of the values that underpin this great institution.
