John and Richard Blackborne

John Blackborne was buried in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey on 8th January 1609 but the exact location is not known and there is no grave or monument for him. He was a butler to the scholars of Westminster School from 1607 and had been a porter looking after the "lower gate" in the Abbey precincts jointly with his uncle from 1598. On 6th April 1600 at St Margaret's Westminster he married Alice Philips and his second wife was Gertrude. He was a son of Christopher Blackborne of Sharnford in Leicester and his wife Isabel (Winterborne). Her father John Winterborne was an Abbey verger, one of Dean Goodman's most faithful servants, and was buried on 23rd November 1607 in the cloisters.

Richard Blackborne, his brother, was an under-butler and Abbey bellringer and was buried on 28th May 1610, mostly likely with his brother.
