John Bancroft

John Bancroft and his wife Elizabeth are buried in the north cloister of Westminster Abbey. The rather faint gravestone inscription reads:

Here lie the remains of Elizabeth wife of John Bancroft, Gent. who died the 7th of Dec. 1758 aged 78 years. Also the abovesaid John Bancroft, Gent., who died the 17th of March 1762 aged 78 years

He was a doorkeeper at the House of Lords and formerly a servant to the famous Duke of Marlborough and attended him at all his campaigns. His wife died in Old Palace Yard, adjacent to the Abbey precincts, having been necessary-woman to the House of Lords. He left some money in his will to a Martha Bancroft but no relationship was given and it is assumed there were no children of the marriage.
