Susannah Bernard

In the north cloister of Westminster Abbey is a small white marble tablet to Susannah Bernard. Unfortunately when the inscription was re-painted the date was put wrongly as 1791 instead of 1721. Her father Sir Edward was knighted in 1669 and she had two sisters Mary (Hosier) and Elizabeth (Avery). It is not known why she was buried in the cloister unless perhaps she lived in the area. The inscription reads:

Near this place lies interr'd the body of Susannah Bernard one of the daughters of Sr. Edward Bernard of Beverly in the county of York, knight, who died 11th of Septem. 1791 [1721] in the 53rd year of her age. This monument was erected in memory of the deceased by her loving cousin Mrs Arabella Thomson.
