Spring Family

In the west cloister of Westminster Abbey is a gravestone for various members of the Spring family. The inscription, which is faint in places, reads:

Mrs Dorcas Spring died March 14 1755 aged 69 years. Also Mr William Spring her husband who died June 25 1757 aged 86 years. Also Elizabeth Mountain daughter of the above mentioned Mr and Mrs Spring who died September 23 1767 aged 33 years. Also of Thomas Mountain who died May 11 1762 aged 34 years. Mr George West, apothecary, died August 22 1773 aged 52 years. Mrs Sarah West widow of the above Mr George West died January 17 1784 aged 63 years. Mr James Spring died August 21 1747 in the 20th years of his age.

William was a goldsmith and freeman of the City of London and he had a sister Mary (Creswell). Sarah West was a daughter of Dorcas and William. She married George at Duke Street Chapel (near Horse Guards Parade) on 21st April 1748 but appears to have had no children. She later lived in Dartmouth Street near the Abbey.
