Marian Clough

Marian Clough died on 21st May 1798 of a "dropsical complaint" and was buried in the west cloister of Westminster Abbey, aged 64. But she has no marker.

Since 1781 she had kept a respectable boarding house for the scholars of Westminster School (such ladies were called Dames by the scholars). Her first house was no. 1 Dean's Yard and then she moved to the centre house on the Terrace of the Yard (now the site of Church House). She had a daughter Sarah whose husband had promised to help Marian pay for her house but had not done it and left her in distress. So in her will she stated "I solemnly cut off my daughter's husband, the Revd. Richard Glover of St John's College, Cambridge, from having the most trifling article belonging to me.. or anything else concerning me." She did leave money to Sarah's children - Jane, Marian, John, Thomas, Richard, William, Bright and Robert. Sarah took over the running of her house. Marian's will was proved by her friend James William Dodd of Westminster School, who was her House Usher.

Her will is at the National Archives.
