John Sharole

John Sharole (or Du Charol) was buried in the east cloister of Westminster Abbey on 8th August 1687. The inscription on his gravestone, which was near that of Aphra Behn, has worn away but it read:

Mr John Sharol one of the King's chaplains. Obiit [died] Aug.5th 1687 aged 40 years

He was originally John Chrisostome Du Charol and with his wife Jane was naturalized in England in 1685 although he had been a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal since 1676. He was also chaplain of the regiment of horse commanded by James, Earl of Arran and a minor canon of the Abbey from 1684-1687. In his will he left some money to Elizabeth Beranger, daughter of a London merchant but appears to have had no children.
