Robert Constable, Viscount Dunbar

Just inside the gates of the north choir aisle of Westminster Abbey is a mural marble monument for Robert Constable, Viscount Dunbar and his second wife. Both are buried in the nave near the entrance to the choir. The inscription reads:

Near this lies the Rt. Honble. Robert Lord Constable Viscount Dunbar who departed this life Novr. the 23 1714 in the 64th year of his age. Also his second wife the Rt. Honble. Dorothy Brudenell Countess of Westmorland who departed this life Jany. the 26th 1739 aged 91.

The coat of arms shows "barry of six, or and azure" for Constable with a crest of a dragon's head.

He was a son of John, 2nd Viscount Dunbar and Lady Mary Brudenell (daughter of the 1st Earl of Cardigan). Robert succeeded as 3rd Viscount in 1666 and married firstly Mary, daughter of Lord Belasyse and their daughter Mary was baptised in 1672. In 1671 he pleaded guilty to an indictment of murder of Peter Varnall but obtained a king's pardon. His second wife was a daughter of the 2nd Earl of Cardigan and widow of Charles Fane, 3rd Earl of Westmorland, but they had no children. He was suceeded by his brother William.
