Lady Waldegrave

Mary, wife of James, 2nd Baron Waldegrave and later Earl Waldegrave (died 1741), was buried in the middle aisle of the nave of Westminster Abbey on 27th January 1719, not far from the entrance to the quire. But no inscription was recorded for her and the small stone with her name, inserted in the mid 19th century, has now worn away.

She was a daughter of Sir John Webb, Baronet, and his wife Barbara daughter of John 1st Lord Belasyse. She married James in 1714 and died in childbed aged 23. Son James succeeded as the 2nd Earl, and his brother John (1718-1784) became the 3rd Earl - he was a Member of Parliament, a colonel in the army and governor of Plymouth and married Elizabeth Leveson-Gower.
