Dorothy Howard Graham

Dorothy, eldest daughter of William Howard (4th son of Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Berkshire) was buried in St John the Baptist's chapel in Westminster Abbey on 17th December 1701. Her mother was Elizabeth, daughter of Lord Dundas. She was a maid of honour to the Queen (Catherine of Braganza) and John Evelyn mentioned her in his diary as of high character. In 1675 she married at St Martin in the Fields church in London James Graham (or Grahme) of Levens Hall in Westmoreland (son of the 2nd Baronet of Esk) who was a Member of Parliament and Privy Purse to James II. They had three sons and two daughters. Their daughter Catherine married her cousin Henry Bowes, 11th Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire. Dorothy's brother Craven Howard married Anne Ogle in the Abbey on 29th July 1673 and her sister Anne married Sir Gabriel Sylvius (carver to the Queen) in the Abbey in 1677. A modern black marble stone in the chapel records her name "Dorothy [Howard] w. of Col. James Graham 1701" and others of the Howard family buried in the vault.
