John Davis

Colonel John Davis was buried in the south aisle of the nave of Westminster Abbey on 16th December 1725. His gravestone is no longer readable but had the same inscription as the white mural monument, in the form of a curtain with a gilded fringe, which was erected near the door into the west cloister. But this was moved to the north aisle when Charles Herries' monument was put up and is now in the window splay in the first bay. This is signed by the sculptor Tyler. At the top is a coat of arms. The inscription reads:

Near this place under a black marble stone lyeth interr'd ye body of ye Honble. Col. John Davis, Esq. [Esquire], late President of His Majests. Council of the Island of St Christophers, who died the 13th of December 1725 aged 63 years

His natural son was Stephen Davis, one of his slaves who were freed after his death.
