Guyon Griffith

In the north cloister of Westminster Abbey is a small white marble tablet to schoolboy Guyon Griffith. The inscription reads:

Near this tablet are interr'd the remains of Guyon Griffith of Westminster School, youngest son of the late Revd. Guyon Griffith D.D. Rector of St Mary at Hill in the City of London. He died on the twenty first day of October 1789 aged eleven years

He was buried on 28th October. It was quite usual at this period for any boy who died while at the School in the Abbey precincts to be buried in the cloister area. His father, son of Dr Moses Griffith of Colchester, was also lecturer at St Michael, Cornhill in London and had died in 1784. The fee for the monument was paid by Charles Harris, statuary.
