Edward Jones

The Reverend Dr Edward Jones, Bishop of St Asaph from 1692, was buried on the south side of the chancel in St Margaret's Church Westminster on 13th May 1703. His son Richard was buried there on 11th March 1704. Neither has a gravestone or memorial.

He was the son of Richard Jones and his wife Sarah (Pyttes) and was born in 1641 at Llwyn Rivid in Montgomeryshire, Wales. At Westminster School he was a King's Scholar under Dr Busby and went on to Cambridge university. He was domestic chaplain to the Duke of Ormond, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. His first wife was Maria Hurd (died 1670) and his second, by whom he had six children, was Elizabeth Kennedy. While Master of Kilkenny College Jonathan Swift was one of his pupils. In 1678 he became Dean of Lismore, and then Bishop of Cloyne. He was suspended from his bishopric for mal-administration and corruption. He died at his house in College Court, Westminster. His brother Matthew (1654-1717) was also a clergyman and married Bridget Kennedy (sister of Elizabeth).
