Maurice Emmett

On the north wall of St Margaret's church Westminster is a memorial to Maurice (Morris or Morice) Emmett. It is presumed to be by his brother, sculptor William Emmett, who was also a woodcarver who had worked with Grinling Gibbons.  The coat of arms at the top is described as " party per pale sable, a fess engrailed ermine between three bulls heads caboshed, or. 2. Gules 10 billets or".

The inscription reads:

"In perpetual memory of Maurice Emmett [abbreviated as P.M.S M.E.]. In the vault near adjoyning this monument lies interred the body of Maurice Emmett of this parish Esqr. who departed this life, the twenty seventh day of November 1694 aged 48"

Morris Emmett senior was buried in the church on 12th September 1692. He was Master Bricklayer in the Office of Works in 1660 and Maurice junior held the same post from 1677.  A Morice Emmett, bricklayer, had leased a tenement in the Almonry at Westminster in 1676 - this could be the father or the son.
