Mary & Elizabeth Illingworth

Mary Illingworth and her mother Elizabeth are buried in the north transept of Westminster Abbey. The gravestone, near Robert Peel's statue, reads:

Here lieth the body of Mary Illingworth who departed this life June 4th 1758. Also the body of Elizabeth Illingworth her mother who died January 28th 1760 aged 80 years. Her great grandson and heir Rcd. [Richard] Standish Haly, Lieutenant R.N. [Royal Navy] served in Egypt with Lord Keith, was author of the plan abolishing impressment in the Navy and died in Jamaica carrying out the Act for the Emancipation of the slaves 1835, aged 56 years

The latter part of the inscription was added in 1958 when a new gravestone was laid. Mary lived in Queen Square Westminster with her mother and they left estates in the Manchester area to Mary's sister Zenoby Ann (Bowker) (whose children were Elizabeth, Ann and Maria Bowker). Their relative was Thomas Illingworth, postmaster of Lancaster. Richard Haly is presumably buried in Jamaica.
