The Reverend Dr James Hawkey installed as Canon Theologian

The Reverend Dr James Hawkey was installed as a Canon of Westminster during Evensong at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 19th January 2019.

At the Installation, the Receiver General of the Abbey, Mr Paul Baumann CBE, presented and read The Queen's Grant and Mandamus in the presence of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster and the Collegiate body.

Canon Hawkey read the Latin Declaration and was led to his vacant stall in the Quire of the Abbey Church by the Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall.

During the service, the Reverend Jane Sinclair, Canon in Residence, read Leviticus 16: 11-22, and the Dean read Hebrews 10: 19–25.

The sermon was preached by the Dean.

The service was sung by the Choir of Westminster Abbey conducted by James O'Donnell, Organist and Master of the Choristers. The organ was played by Peter Holder, Sub-Organist.

Canon Hawkey returns to Westminster Abbey after three years as Dean and Director of Studies in Theology at Clare College, Cambridge. He was previously the Abbey’s Minor Canon and Sacrist from 2010, becoming Minor Canon and Precentor in 2013, before moving to Cambridge. He will serve as Canon Theologian, succeeding the Reverend Professor Vernon White who retired in September 2018.

Following the service, Canon Hawkey was installed at his place in Chapter within the Jerusalem Chamber.
