Evensong
Welcome to Westminster Abbey. Daily prayer has been offered in this place for over a thousand years, and your participation in today's service is warmly welcomed. At choral Evensong most of the service is sung by the choir on our behalf. We participate through our presence and our listening, that the words and the music might become a prayer within us and lift us to contemplate God's beauty and glory.
The service always includes one or more psalms. These ancient prayers, taken from the Old Testament, reflect the full range of human emotions and experiences; from the depths of anger, resentment, and abandonment to the heights of ecstatic joy and praise. They were used by Jesus, and have always been at the heart of the Church's daily prayer.
The canticles Magnificat (Luke 1: 46–55) and Nunc dimittis (Luke 2: 29–32) reflect two responses to the Incarnation (God becoming fully human in Jesus Christ). Both speak of the fulfilment of God's promises, not just to 'Abraham and his seed', but also 'to be a light to lighten the Gentiles' (all nations). With their themes of fulfilment and completion, these texts have been given central place for many centuries in the Church's prayers for the evening and at the end of the day.
Please join in saying the words printed in bold type.
The church is served by a hearing loop. Users should turn their hearing aid to the setting marked T.
Photography, filming, and sound recording are not allowed in the Abbey during services. Please ensure that mobile telephones and other electronic devices are silent.
The service is sung by the Lay Vicars of Westminster Abbey.
Following the service, a collection will be taken; the money from today's services will be divided equally between Conciliation Resources and the work of the Abbey. Conciliation Resources is an international organisation committed to stopping violent conflict and creating more peaceful societies.
The Commonwealth Nations
On the second Monday in March each year, members of all Commonwealth Nations from around the world come together at the Abbey for the Commonwealth Service, in the presence of the Head of the Commonwealth His Majesty King Charles III, in celebration of both their diversity of culture and common purpose. Throughout the year, and to mark an important national day in the life of each Commonwealth Nation, the Abbey is proud to invite High Commissioners or their representatives and their guests to attend Evensong and to pray for their governments and citizens. Today, the Abbey welcomes the Deputy High Commissioner of the Commonwealth of Dominica to the United Kingdom on the Independence Day of that realm. The Deputy High Commissioner will read the second lesson.
Order of Service
All stand as the choir and clergy enter
The choir sings the Introit
Vir celse, forma fulgida
Virtutis, hymnum suscipe,
Qui jure dum te praedicat,
Dei canit magnalia.
Qui sempiternus Pontifex
Stirpem Deo mortalium
Revinxit, atque reddidit
Paci novo nos fœdere,
Te fecit ipse providus
Sui ministrum muneris,
Patri daturum gloriam
Ejusque vitam plebibus.
Sit Trinitati gloria
Quae sancti honoris munia
Tibi ministro sedulo
Dignis coronat gaudiis.
O exalted man, O shining form of virtue, receive the hymn which, while praising you, sings of the great works of God.
Christ the eternal high priest who has given us eternal life through God, and returned us to peace through a new alliance:
he himself saw fit to make you a minister of his own gift, to give glory to the Father and life to his people.
May the Trinity, to whom be glory, crown you with worthy joys, O diligent priest, in your exercise of sacred duties.
Words: from the Common of Pastors, Roman rite
Music: plainsong
All remain standing as the officiant introduces the Confession
Beloved, we are come together in the presence of Almighty God and of the whole company of heaven to offer unto him through our Lord Jesus Christ our worship and praise and thanksgiving; to make confession of our sins; to pray, as well for others as for ourselves, that we may know more truly the greatness of God's love and show forth in our lives the fruits of his grace; and to ask on behalf of all people such things as their well-being doth require. Wherefore let us sit or kneel and keep silence, and remember God's presence with us now.
All kneel or sit to say together
O God, our Father,
we have sinned against thee
in thought, word, and deed;
we have not loved thee with all our heart;
we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves.
Have mercy upon us, we beseech thee;
cleanse us from our sins;
and help us to overcome our faults;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The officiant gives the Absolution
May the almighty and merciful Lord grant unto you pardon and remission of all your sins, time for amendment of life, and the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
All say together the Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.
All stand. The officiant and choir sing the Responses
Music: plainsong
All sit. The choir sings Psalm 10
Why standest thou so far off, O Lord : and hidest thy face in the needful time of trouble?
The ungodly for his own lust doth persecute the poor : let them be taken in the crafty wiliness that they have imagined.
For the ungodly hath made boast of his own heart's desire : and speaketh good of the covetous, whom God abhorreth.
The ungodly is so proud, that he careth not for God : neither is God in all his thoughts.
His ways are alway grevious : thy judgements are far above out of his sight, and therefore defieth he all his enemies.
For he hath said in his heart, Tush, I shall never be cast down : there shall no harm happen unto me.
His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and fraud : under his tongue is ungodliness and vanity.
He sitteth lurking in the thievish corners of the streets : and privily in his lurking dens doth he murder the innocent; his eyes are set against the poor.
For he lieth waiting secretly, even as a lion lurketh he in his den : that he may ravish the poor.
He doth ravish the poor : when he getteth him into his net.
He falleth down, and humbleth himself : that the congregation of the poor may fall into the hands of his captains.
He hath said in his heart, Tush, God hath forgotten : he hideth away his face, and he will never see it.
Arise, O Lord God, and lift up thine hand : forget not the poor.
Wherefore should the wicked blaspheme God : while he doth say in his heart, Tush, thou God carest not for it.
Surely thou hast seen it : for thou beholdest ungodliness and wrong.
That thou mayest take the matter into thy hand : the poor committeth himself unto thee; for thou art the helper of the friendless.
Break thou the power of the ungodly and malicious : take away his ungodliness, and thou shalt find none.
The Lord is King for ever and ever : and the heathen are perished out of the land.
Lord, thou hast heard the desire of the poor : thou preparest their heart, and thine ear hearkeneth thereto;
to help the fatherless and poor unto their right : that the man of the earth be no more exalted against them.
All stand
Chant: plainsong
All sit for the first Lesson, Ezekiel 18: 21–end
If the wicked turn away from all their sins that they have committed and keep all my statutes and do what is lawful and right, they shall surely live; they shall not die. None of the transgressions that they have committed shall be remembered against them; for the righteousness that they have done they shall live. Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, says the Lord God, and not rather that they should turn from their ways and live? But when the righteous turn away from their righteousness and commit iniquity and do the same abominable things that the wicked do, shall they live? None of the righteous deeds that they have done shall be remembered; for the treachery of which they are guilty and the sin they have committed, they shall die.
Yet you say, 'The way of the Lord is unfair.' Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way unfair? Is it not your ways that are unfair? When the righteous turn away from their righteousness and commit iniquity, they shall die for it; for the iniquity that they have committed they shall die. Again, when the wicked turn away from the wickedness they have committed and do what is lawful and right, they shall save their life. Because they considered and turned away from all the transgressions that they had committed, they shall surely live; they shall not die. Yet the house of Israel says, 'The way of the Lord is unfair.' O house of Israel, are my ways unfair? Is it not your ways that are unfair?
Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, all of you according to your ways, says the Lord God. Repent and turn from all your transgressions; otherwise iniquity will be your ruin. Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed against me, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, says the Lord God. Turn, then, and live.
Here ends the first lesson.
All stand. The choir sings Magnificat
and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
and holy is his name.
throughout all generations.
he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
and hath exalted the humble and meek;
and the rich he hath sent empty away.
hath holpen his servant Israel,
as he promised to our forefathers,
Abraham and his seed, for ever.
Fauxbourdon Service, Simon Whiteley
All sit for the second Lesson, Matthew 18: 12–20
Jesus said, 'What do you think? If a shepherd has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. So it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost.
'If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax-collector. Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.'
Here ends the second lesson.
All stand. The choir sings Nunc dimittis
according to thy word;
and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Fauxbourdon Service, Simon Whiteley
All face east to say together the Apostles' Creed
I believe in God the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth:
and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
the holy catholic Church;
the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting.
Amen.
The officiant and choir sing the Lesser Litany; the Lord's Prayer and the Responses
Let us pray.
All kneel or sit
Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.
The officiant sings the Collects; of the day, for peace, and for aid against all perils
Lord, we beseech thee to keep thy household the Church in continual godliness; that through thy protection it may be free from all adversities, and devoutly given to serve thee in good works, to the glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both, our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that, by thee, we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.
Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Music: plainsong
All sit. The choir sings the Anthem
In pace in idipsum dormiam et requiescam.
Si dedero somnum oculis meis, et palpebris meis dormitacionem;
dormiam et requiescam.
Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto.
In pace in idipsum dormiam et requiescam.
In peace I will sleep and take my rest. If I will allow my eyelids to sleep, and my eyelids to slumber; I will sleep and take my rest. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. In peace I will sleep and take my rest.
Words: Responsory at Compline, Psalms 4: 8a; 132: 4
Music: Grayston Ives (b 1948)
All kneel or remain seated for the Intercessions
The officiant says the Prayers; for the Royal Family, and for the Members of the Order of the Bath
Almighty God, the fountain of all goodness, we humbly beseech thee to bless our most gracious Sovereign Lord King Charles, Queen Camilla, William Prince of Wales, the Princess of Wales, and all the Royal Family: endue them with thy Holy Spirit; enrich them with thy heavenly grace; prosper them with all happiness; and bring them to thine everlasting kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
God save our Gracious Sovereign, and all the Members of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath living and departed. Amen.
All say
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
be with us all evermore.
Amen.
All stand as the choir and clergy depart
Those who wish to may sit for the remainder of the organ voluntary
