St Margaret's choir war memorial

Two brasses in the chancel aisle in St Margaret's church Westminster remember former choristers who died during the Great War and the Second World War. 


The inscription on the First World War brass reads:

Roll of Honour Members of the Choir St Margaret's Church who fell in the War 1914-1918
Henry, Leslie, Rifleman, 9th London Regt. (Queen Victoria Rifles) Aged 19. Killed in action in France Oct. 2. 1916
Still, Reginald Sydney Hewitt, 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Fusiliers. Aged 22. Killed in action on the Somme Oct. 7. 1916
Syms, Stanley Edward Emery, Gunner, Royal Garrison Artillery. Aged 30. Killed in action in France Dec. 9. 1916
Hayward, Henry Cyril, M.M. [Military Medal], Compy. Sergt. Major, 8th Batt. Rifle Brigade. Aged 23. Killed in action at Bapeaume. April 4. 1917
Hider, Arthur Leslie George, Lieutenant South Staffordshire Regt. Aged 24. Killed in action in France May 27. 1917
Newman, Eric Thomas, Private 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regt. Aged 19. Killed in action at Crevecourt. Oct. 8. 1918
Cozens, Cyril Percy, Rifleman London Rifle Brigade. Aged 19. Killed in action at Cambrai. Oct. 11, 1918

Leslie Henry was a son of Charles and Agnes.

Reginald Still was a son of Arthur and Mary and his name appears on the Thiepval memorial.

Stanley Syms, son of Edward and Grace, married Jessie Clack and had a son Thomas.

Henry Hayward's parents were Albert and Elizabeth.

Arthur Hider was born on 8th June 1893, son of Arthur and Annie of Putney. He married Muriel Stevenson in March 1917.

Eric Newman was born on 10th August 1899 son of Alfred and Emma of Peckham.

Cyril Cozens was born in Clapham on 2nd July 1899, son of P.J. and Clara.

Eric Arthur Brown, Royal Artillery
Kenneth Patrick Cochrane Doyle, Royal Air Force
John Harry Clifford Sutherland, Duke of Wellington's Regt.
John Grenfell Wise, Royal Air Force

The boys above were recruited from Westminster City School. We don't know the choir dates for all of them but Sidney served in the choir from 1924-1917, Eric served from 1931-1933, Kenneth served during 1933 and John Sutherland was in the choir from 1931-1933.
