Sackville Whittle

Sackville Whittle, surgeon to King Charles II, was buried in the north cloister of Westminster Abbey. He was born about 1631 and was a son of William Whittle of Lancashire. In 1667 he married as his second wife Margaret, daughter of John Fox. She died 20th June 1729 and was buried with Sackville. No children were mentioned in his will. The gravestone inscription has now worn away but was recorded in a guidebook of 1683 as:

Here lieth the body of Sackvil Whittle, Esq. Chirurgeon [surgeon] to his Majesties Person, who departed this life the 19th of February 1680 being in the 50th year of his age

The date of death is given in Old Style dating, now called 1681.

His brother Richard died in 1689 and was buried, probably in the east cloister. He had two daughters, Elizabeth and Anne, who divided his estate with his widow (name unknown).

Elizabeth, sister of the two above, married Sir Stephen Fox. Stephen was a brother of John Fox. William, Edward, James, John and Stephen, all young children of this couple, were buried in the north cloisters. A rather worn monument still remains on the wall there for two of the brothers. Their daughter Elizabeth married Charles, Lord Cornwallis in the Abbey in 1673 and their children William and James were buried in the cloister.
