John was crowned in Westminster Abbey on 27th May 1199. It seems he displayed "unseemly levity" during the ceremony and left before receiving the Sacrament.

John Broughton, champion boxer and later Yeoman of the Guard, was buried in the west cloister of Westminster Abbey in 1789.

Henry John Temple, Viscount Palmerston, Prime Minister, is buried with his wife in the north transept. There is an over life-size statue of him nearby.
