Gabriel More

Dr Gabriel More, or Moore, was buried in the Quire area of Westminster Abbey, near the Sub-Dean's stall, on 29th October 1652. He has no marker or memorial. He was a son of Richard More, Member of Parliament for Grantham, and his second wife Goditha Green. He was baptised in the town on 18th April 1585. His brother was possibly Blessed Hugh More. Educated at Cambridge he was rector at Elton on the Hill in Nottinghamshire and at Barton le Cley in Bedfordshire before becoming prebendary at Westminster in 1632. He was also chaplain to the Duke of Buckingham. In the 1640s, during the time of the Civil War when clergy left the Abbey, it was said of More that he "sculks up and down" so presumably he was in Westminster at certain times. A Mary Moore, possibly his wife or a relative, was buried on 16th February 1649 in the north ambulatory. His will was proved by his nephew Gabriel.
