Martin Clifford

Author and Poet

Martin Clifford, author, poet, court wit and Master of the Charterhouse, was buried in St Margaret's Church Westminster on 13th December 1677 (although he is down as Matthew in the register). He has no grave marker or memorial.

He was the son of Henry Clifford and his wife Cecily (Fotherby) and was Captain of the King's Scholars at Westminster School before going on to Cambridge university where he became friends with poet Abraham Cowley. Later he was a secretary to George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and it was probably through his influence that he obtained the post at Charterhouse in 1671. In 1674 his work Treatise of Humane Reason was published.
