Lady Elizabeth Rich

Lady Elizabeth Rich was buried in the north transept of Westminster Abbey on 20th October 1773 aged 81 but she has no monument or gravestone. She was the daughter and co-heir of Colonel Edward Griffith, one of the Clerks of the Board of Green Cloth and private secretary to Prince George of Denmark, and his wife Elizabeth (daughter of Dr Thomas Lawrence, physician to Queen Anne). On 28th September 1714 she married Sir Robert Rich (1685-1768), 4th Baronet of London, Field Marshal and Member of Parliament. His family were descended from the elder branch of the family of Rich, Earls of Warwick. They had three sons, including Sir Robert Rich 5th Baronet who attended Westminster School. He also had an army career and rose to the rank of Lt. General. He was Governor of Londonderry and Colmore Fort and married Mary Ludlow and secondly Elizabeth Williams. Lady Elizabeth's daughter married George, 1st Baron Lyttelton. She died at her house in Cleveland Row, Westminster. Her sister Anne married William Stanhope, 1st Earl of Harrington.
