Hugh Haughton

On the south wall of St Margaret's Church Westminster is a monument to Hugh Haughton and his wife. This shows two kneeling figures (the head of the man has been broken off) with two daughters behind, one of whom holds a skull to denote that she pre-deceased her parents. The inscription, painted in gold, reads:

Heere resteth in assured hope to rise in Christ the body of Hugh Haughton fourth sonne of Thomas Haughter of Haughton in ye county of Chester, gent: who married Frances daughter of William Cooth of Sherborne in the county of Dorsett, gent: and by her had issue two daughters, Elizabeth and Frances. Hee departed this life ye 17th day of October 1616 aged 50 years & Elizabeth departed this life ye 28th day of August 1615 aged 7 yeares and lieth here also interred"

Under the arch behind the figures is the inscription:

Frances Haughton in token of her love to her husbande caused this monument to be erected

The coats of arms show "sable, in chief for distinction a martlet argent, three bars of the same" and the same arms impaling "gules a fess argent between three escallop shells of the same". it does not appear that Frances or her other daughter were buried in the church.
