Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln

On the wall of the south choir aisle of Westminster Abbey is the carved shield of Henry de Lacy, 5th Earl of Lincoln (1249-1311). This series of shields are traditionally of individuals and families who were benefactors to the building of Henry III's Gothic Abbey (from 1245-1272). The arms are "quarterly gules and or, a baston sinister sable and a label of five points argent, all with a border sable". He was the son of Edmund de Lacy and became a trusted servant of Edward I. Also keeper of Knaresborough Castle and the King's Lieutenant in Aquitaine. His first wife was Margaret, daughter of William Longspee and his second was Joan, daughter of William, Lord Martin. He was buried in old St Paul's cathedral.
