Charles Hickman

The Reverend Dr Charles Hickman, bishop of Derry (Londonderry), was buried in the south aisle of the nave of Westminster Abbey but he has no monument or gravestone. He was a son of William Hickman of Barnack in Northampton and his wife Abigail and was educated at Westminster School and Oxford university. At various times he was chaplain to the Duke of Southampton, Baron Chandos and the Earl of Rochester. He was also rector of Farnham Royal and of Taplow in Buckinghamshire, lecturer at St James' Westminster and chaplain in ordinary to William and Mary and Queen Anne. On 11th June 1703 he was consecrated bishop of Derry having married a few months previously Anne, daughter of Sir Roger Burgoyne, at Chelsea Hospital chapel. They had a daughter Anne.
