A Service of Thanksgiving and Rededication to mark the 83rd anniversary of the Battle of Britain was held at Westminster Abbey on Sunday 17th September 2023. His Majesty The King was represented at the service by Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton.

James Oswald was buried in the north aisle of the nave in 1769. A small rectangular brass with a decorated border now covers his grave.

John and Paul Methuen have a joint memorial in the south choir aisle of Westminster Abbey. John was the eldest son of Paul Methuen (d.1667).

The Reverend William Bell, D.D., writer and philanthropist, was buried on 8th October 1816. His unmarried sisters Lucy and Mary were buried with him.

Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, eminent musician, was buried in the north choir aisle, near the graves of Henry Purcell, John Blow and William Sterndale Bennett.

John Blow, organist and composer, was buried in the north choir aisle in 1708, near the door which at that time led to the organ.

In the south aisle of the nave is a memorial with bust to Zachary Pearce, Dean of Westminster. The monument was erected in about 1777.

The Reverend Dr John Troutbeck, Minor Canon of Westminster 1869-1899, was buried in the East Cloister. He was a son of George Troutbeck of Penrith.

Appointment of a new Deputy Receiver General

Westminster Abbey is very pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Curtis Juman, currently Chief Resources Officer at the Equality and Human Rights Commission, to the post of Deputy Receiver General and Director of Finance in succession to Mr Stuart Bailey, who retired in September.

Abbey Sub-Dean appointed Dean of Durham

The Venerable Andrew Tremlett, Sub-Dean of Westminster and Rector of St Margaret's Church, has been appointed Dean of Durham. He will take up his new post at Durham Cathedral in the summer. He succeeds the Very Reverend Michael Sadgrove who retired in September.
