Dean of Westminster to retire in November next year

The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, announced today (Friday 28th September) that he will retire next year on 1st November 2019, All Saints Day, after 13 years at Westminster Abbey.

John Hall, the 38th Dean of Westminster, oversees the spiritual life of Westminster Abbey, and gives leadership to the Abbey community, which includes 350 staff and 500 volunteers. The office of Dean is a Crown appointment. Because the Abbey is a Royal Peculiar, the Dean is responsible to the Sovereign alone.

Dr Hall said:

It has been an enormous privilege and pleasure serving as Dean of Westminster and I have been immensely grateful for the opportunity. I have enjoyed the benefit of a wonderful team of colleagues, with whom we have been able to undertake some fascinating projects as well as maintaining and enhancing the daily round of worship and many special services.

The appointment of the Dean’s successor will be made by Her Majesty The Queen following an open application process.
