  • Milman Children

    In the north choir aisle is the grave, with brass letters, of three young children of Henry Hart Milman, Canon of Westminster 1835 to 1849.

    Musician

    In the west cloister is a white marble tablet to John and Avis Freeman. Called "Honest Brother Freeman" he was a member of the Abbey.

    Dean

    Samuel Horsley was Dean of Westminster from 1793-1802 but he has no memorial in the Abbey. His portrait hangs in the Deanery.

    Musician and Composer

    Dr William Turner, singer and composer, was buried with his wife in the west cloister. For the coronation of James II he wrote two anthems.

  • New Canon Theologian appointed

    Monday, 20th December 2010

    It is announced today (Tuesday 21st December 2010) from 10 Downing Street that Her Majesty The Queen has approved the appointment of The Reverend Vernon White as a Canon of Westminster. He will become Canon Theologian in succession to the Reverend Canon Dr Nicholas Sagovsky, who will be leaving the Abbey in January.

    The Reverend Vernon White was installed as a Canon of Westminster at Evensong on Saturday 7th May 2011.

    The Reverend Canon Martin Seeley, Principal, Westcott House, was ordained and consecrated Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich; and the Reverend Canon Michael Beasley, Director of Mission in the Diocese of Oxford, was ordained and consecrated Bishop of Hertford in the Diocese of St Albans at a Eucharist at Westminster Abbey on Ascension day, Thursday 14th May 2015.

    The Venerable Karen Gorham, Archdeacon of Buckingham, was ordained and consecrated Bishop of Sherborne in the Diocese of Salisbury; and the Reverend Canon Michael Harrison, Director of Ministry and Mission in the Diocese of Leicester, was ordained and consecrated Bishop of Dunwich in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich at a Eucharist at Westminster Abbey on the Feast of St Matthias the Apostle, Wednesday 24th February 2016.

  • Marie of Savoy, Queen of France

    In 1810 Marie Josephine Louise de Savoy was buried in a vault in the Lady Chapel at Westminster Abbey. Her body was moved to Sardinia in 1811.

  • John Fox

    Priest/Minister

    John Fox was buried on 27th September 1623 in the north transept (the broad aisle) of Westminster Abbey but he has no memorial or marker.

  • Thomas Turton

    Writer, Composer, Dean and Priest/Minister

    Dr Thomas Turton was Dean of Westminster from 1842-1845 but has no memorial at Westminster Abbey. He was buried at Kensal Green cemetery in London.

  • Francis Hughes

    Musician

    Francis Hughes, well known opera singer of his day, was buried on 21st March 1744 in the west cloister but has no marker.

  • George Ebenezer Williams

    Musician

    George Ebenezer Williams was Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey from 1814-1819. He was buried in the south cloister in April 1819.

  • George Jay

    Priest/Minister

    The Reverend Dr George Jay, Dean Designate of Peterborough, was buried in the south transept of Westminster Abbey on 5th November 1661.

  • Thomas Gorges

    Priest/Minister

    Dr Thomas Gorges was buried in Westminster Abbey on 14th December 1667 but the location is not known and he has no monument.

  • Margery Croft

    Margery Croft, maid of honour to Elizabeth, Queen of Bohemia, was buried in the south transept on 14th December 1637 but nothing marks her grave.

  • Henry Abingdon

    Musician

    Henry Abingdon, Master of the Choristers of the Chapel Royal in the reign of Edward IV, was buried in St Margaret's Church Westminster in 1497.
