    The Reverend Professor Vernon White, who has been Canon Theologian of Westminster Abbey since June 2011 and a Visiting Professor at King’s College London, is to retire at the end of September 2018.

  • Coronation Crowns

    Coronations have taken place in Westminster Abbey since 1066, when William the Conqueror was crowned on Christmas Day. The church has been closely linked with the royal family all through its history, and that continues today with the monarch visiting the Abbey throughout the year.     James II was born on 14th October 1633. His coronation with his queen, Mary of Modena, took place at Westminster Abbey on 23rd April 1685.

  • Henry VIII

    The coronation of Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon took place in the Abbey on 24th June 1509. He is buried at Windsor.

  • Voice and Verse Panel: Poets' Corners Across the Pond

  • Edward I and Eleanor of Castile

    Edward and Eleanor's coronation took place on 19th August 1274. Both are buried in St Edward's chapel in Westminster Abbey and Eleanor has a fine effigy.

  • Sir Bernard Brocas

    Soldier

    In the chapel of St Edmund is the tomb of Sir Bernard Brocas (1330?-1395). Brocas was a favourite knight of Edward the "Black Prince".

  • Charles II

    Charles' coronation took place on 23rd April 1661. He was buried in the Abbey on 14th February 1685 in a vault in Henry VII's chapel.

  • Norwegian State Wreath-laying Ceremony

    Tuesday, 25th October 2005

    On Tuesday 25th October the King and Queen with The Crown Prince of Norway laid a wreath at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior.

    King George V was crowned in Westminster Abbey on 22nd June 1911. He supported proposals for the burial of the Unknown Warrior in the Abbey.

  • George Howe

    Soldier

    In the north-west tower chapel in the nave is a memorial to George Augustus, 3rd Viscount Howe. He was commander of the Royal American regiment.

  • Charles III

    King Charles III was crowned in Westminster Abbey on 6th May 2023.

    Soldier

    James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormond, and several members of his family, are buried in a vault at the east end of Henry VII's chapel.
