Wentworth Dillon, Earl of Roscommon

Poet and soldier Wentworth Dillon, 4th Earl of Roscommon was buried on 21st January 1685 in Westminster Abbey near the "Shrine stairs". This would have been the north ambulatory area as stairs led up into the Shrine or Chapel of St Edward from there. He seems never to have had any marker.

Born in Dublin he was son of James Dillon, 3rd Earl of Roscommon, and his wife Elizabeth (Wentworth) sister of the Earl of Strafford. He toured in Europe with Lord Cavendish and returned to England at the Restoration and recovered his Irish estates. He was Master of the Horse to the Duchess of York. His first wife was Lady Frances Boyle by whom he had a son James who pre-deceased him in 1675. His second wife was Isabella Boynton, Lady of the Bedchamber to the Queen. His literary works include Horace's Art of Poetry and Essay on translated verse. His contemporaries, such as Pope and Addison, gave him extravagant praise. He died at his house in St James' Park. His uncle succeeded to his title.
