Sir James Stumpe

Sir James Stumpe, politician, was buried in St Margaret's church Westminster on 10th May 1563 but he has no memorial or gravestone.

He was a son of William (c.1497-1552), M.P. and wealthy clothier of Malmesbury in Wiltshire,  and his wife Joyce (Berkeley). His brother John was also Member of Parliament for Malmesbury and died in 1598. In 1547 James was knighted and became High Sheriff of Wiltshire. His first wife was Bridget, daughter of Sir Edward Baynton (their daughter married Sir Henry Knevet), and his second was Isabella, a daughter of Sir John Leigh and widow of Sir Edward Baynton.
