Henry Elsynge

Henry Elsynge (or Elsyng) was buried in St Margaret's church Westminster on 30th September 1656 but he has no memorial or marker.

He was a son of Henry Elsynge (died 1635), clerk of the parliaments and writer, and his wife Blanche (Hyett). He was baptized at St Dunstan in the West church in London in 1606. Educated at Westminster School he went on to Oxford university and was later admitted to the Middle Temple. He was able to speak several languages and acted as his father's assistant at the House of Lords. Through Archbishop Laud's influence he was appointed clerk of the House of Commons. In 1636 he married Margaret Tyas and they had at least two sons and three daughters. He officiated in the Long Parliament but resigned in 1648 as he did not wish to take part in the prosecution against Charles I. He died in poverty at Hounslow.
