In the south cloister of Westminster Abbey is a plain square memorial commemorating all those in the service of the Crown who died defending freedom and peace. The tablet was designed by Simon Verity and was unveiled by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on 25th March 1982. Wreaths were laid by representatives of the Royal Navy, the Army, Royal Air Force, Police, Fire Brigade, St John's Ambulance Brigade, the Nursing Professions and on behalf of Civilians. The inscription reads:
To the Glory of God and in memory of all those who in the face of violence have given their lives in the service of the Crown to defend freedom, justice and peace
