Sir Andrew Dudley

Sir Andrew Dudley, politician, was buried in St Margaret's Church Westminster on 27th July 1556 but he has no monument or gravestone. He was born in about 1507, the second son of Edmund Dudley, Speaker of the House of Commons 1504 who was beheaded in 1510. His mother was Elizabeth, daughter of Edward Grey Viscount Lisle. In 1547 he was Admiral of the Fleet and was knighted by Edward Seymour, Protector Somerset, the same year. Later on he was created a Knight of the Garter and was also Keeper of the Palace of Westminster, Captain of Guisnes and Keeper of the King's jewels and robes. With his brother John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland, he became involved in the plot to put Lady Jane Grey on the throne.  He was sent to trial and imprisoned but he was released after a suspended sentence.

His intended marriage with Margaret Clifford, daughter of the Earl of Cumberland, was prevented due to the death of Edward VI. His house was in Tothill Street, near the Abbey, and he died unmarried, bequeathing his goods to his nephews Sir Robert Dudley (later Earl of Leicester) and Sir Ambrose Dudley.
