Sarah Thorpe

In the Dark Cloister area of Westminster Abbey is the grave of Sarah Thorpe. Only the words "THORPE" and the date 1776 can now be read on the stone. It is opposite the memorial tablet to Elizabeth Moore. This is the area of the cloisters where more humble people were buried who worked for the Abbey or lived in the immediate area.

Her maiden name was Bacchus and she could have been a connection of John Bacchus, the Abbey carpenter who leased property in the Abbey precincts. She was married at St John's Westminster to Pegram Thorpe, patent sash maker of that parish (presumably of sash windows). She was buried on November 29th 1776 aged 63. Pegram was buried on 29th January 1784 aged 59.
