John and Eleanor Elliott

In the north aisle of St Margaret's church Westminster is a small area known as the Chapel of Christ the Intercessor. This was set up in 1981 by John Elliott junior and his wife Eleanor of the USA and dedicated on 22nd May 1983. A small stone there reads:

This chapel of Christ the Intercessor was given by John and Eleanor Elliott of New York City 26 July 1981 in thanksgiving for their marriage in this church 27 July 1956

The chapel was designed by J. Peter Foster, Surveyor of the Fabric of Westminster Abbey, and the hangings on the reredos were designed by Eric Fraser and embroidered by Jenny Boyd-Carpenter. The central panel depicts Christ interceding between God and Man, facing inwards with arms outstretched towards a descending dove. On each side of this figure are angels with censers. The side panels of embroidery show Christ praying in the Garden of Gethsemane with disciples asleep nearby and Christ on the road of Emmaus greeting two disciples. The altar and rails are by J.E. Snelling and the candle bracket by Arthur Ayres, who also cut the small stone. John (Jock) Elliott was born in Manhattan on 25th January 1921, a child of John and Audrey Elliott and died in 2005. He served in the US Marines during the Second World War and became head of one of the world's largest advertising agencies, Ogilvy & Mather.
