George Lemitare (Lemetayer)

George Lemitare (name also written as Lemetayer, Limeter or Lymitter) was buried in the south ambulatory of Westminster Abbey on 14th January 1626 but nothing marks his grave. He was educated at Oxford and his grant of arms in 1616 shows he was a son of Thomas, of Canterbury in Kent, and his wife Elizabeth, and grandson of Nicholas Lemetayer who came to England from Normandy. His wife was Anne (died 1627) and six of their children were baptised at St Bride's church in London. He worked in the office of the First Fruits and from 1607 was Receiver General and solicitor to the Dean and Chapter of Westminster. From 1621 he held this office jointly with his son Charles. The other children were Edward, Stephen, George, Richard, Ann and Mary (who married a Mr Browne). Most of the children pre-deceased their mother.
