Elizabeth Dinwiddie

Elizabeth, a daughter of Robert Dinwiddie, Lt. Governor of Virginia USA, was buried in St Margaret's church Westminster but unfortunately her memorial is now hidden behind the organ and cannot be seen. The inscription reads:

In the chancel of this church are deposited the remains of Elizabeth Dinwiddie who died October 11th 1773 aged 35 years. She was the daughter of the late Robert Dinwiddie Esq.Lieutenant Governor of Virginia by Rebecca his wife. As a dutiful daughter, a most affectionate sister, a sincere and generous friend she was esteemed through life and deeply lamented by all who knew her. The virtues of a Christian adorned her character and shone most conspicuous at the hour of death, which she met with a calmness and fortitude worthy of her piety. This monument sacred to her memory was erected as a tribute to the most tender and lasting affection by her sister Rebecca Hamilton

Her father Robert (1692-1770) was born in Glasgow and married Rebecca Auchinleck. The family lived in Norfolk, Virginia and later in London. He sent Major George Washington to confront the French in Ohio. Robert is buried at Clifton near Bristol.
