Charles Brett

Charles Brett was married to Mary, daughter of Colonel John Jeaffreson, in Westminster Abbey on 3rd March 1674. He was buried on 27th May 1682 in the side chancel of St Margaret's Westminster. His tablet there has been moved to the south wall. The carved side decorations include symbols of death such as crossed bones, a coffin, a scythe and shovel etc. At the top is his coat of arms "gules, a fess dancette argent between 14 billets, or". The inscription is rather faint and reads: 

Here lyes ye Body of Charles Brett Esqr. one of his Maj. Honble. Band of Gent [leman] Pensioners in Ordinary who lived & dyed a loyall subject to his Prince and true son of the Church of England. He was ye only son of Maj.Genl. Brett of Rotherby in Lycestershire, some time Govern[or] of the Isle of Wight. His mother was ye Lady Worsly [Worseley] daughter to Sr.Henry Neveil [Neville] of Billinbere [Billingbeere] in Barkshire. His first wife was Ann dau. of Sr Ambrose Browne, Bart. of Betsurth [Beechworth or Betchworth] Castle in Surrey by whom he had one dau. yt. dyed. His second wife was Mary dau. of Col.Jeaffreson of Dulingham in Cambridgeshire. He was aged 50 years and 4 months. He dyed the 24th of May in ye yeare of Our Lord Ano. 1682

Lady Worseley's previous husband was Sir Richard Worseley, 1st Baronet of Appuldercombe. Mary was 23 at the date of her marriage and they appear to have had no children. She remarried but died in 1703.
