Alphonso Marsh

Alphonso Marsh, composer and royal musician, was buried in the west cloister of Westminster Abbey on 9th April 1692 but he has no marker. He was the only son of Alphonso (buried at St Margaret's Westminster on 2nd May 1681) and his first wife Mary (Cheston) who married at St Margaret's in 1648. His grandfather Robert March had been a royal musician to Charles I. He had a sister Elizabeth. Like his father the young Alphonso was a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal (1676). He sang tenor at the coronation of James II. From 1691 he was a Lay Vicar in the Abbey choir. His wife Cecilia was buried on 16th January 1691. Their child Mary was baptised at St Margaret's in 1685. Anne Roffey was called his next of kin.
