Alice Gransden

Alice Gransden was buried in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey on 10th September 1645 but the burial register gives no more information on the location within the cloisters. No grave inscription was recorded for her.

She had a licence to marry Henry Gransden of Gravesend in Kent issued on 12th June 1609. She was then a widow, Alice Hatcher, but her maiden name seems to have been Harris. Letters of administration to her estate were granted to her daughter Mary. Mary married John Goodwin at St Margaret's Westminster in 1636. Another daughter Alice married John Hand in 1633. Very little is known about Alice senior, apart from the fact that she lived in Westminster, possibly near the Abbey which is why she was buried in the cloisters.

The letters of administration are kept at the City of Westminster Archives Centre, 10 St Ann's Street, Westminster.
