Thomas Flowerdew

On the south wall of St Margaret's church Westminster is a memorial to Thomas Flowerdew and his son William. Attributed to the sculptor William Wright. The inscription is rather faint but it reads:

Neare this place lieth interred Thomas Flowerdew, Vintner & Free of the ye Company of Haberdashers in London, who married Alice ye daughter of William Walker by whom having issue 3 sons & one daugther he rested from his labors & died in ye Lord Septemb. 15 1637 aged 50. And by him lies buried William Flowerdew their son who being aged 24 yeares departed this life in ye true faith of Christ May 28 1641. To whose memory Alice his loving and sorrowful wife erected this monument 1641.

His daughter Frances married Matthew Betterton and was mother of the famous actor Thomas Betterton (who was buried in the cloister of Westminster Abbey).
