Thomas Arnwaye

On the north wall of St Margaret's church Westminster is a monument to Thomas Arnwaye (Arnway) and his wife Margaret (widow of Mr Udall). She was buried in the church on 9th August 1596 and he on 8th December 1603. They had been married in the church on 22nd June 1586. The monument was re-coloured during restoration in 1947. The bearded figure of Thomas kneels opposite his wife, wearing a black costume with a tall hat, with a kneeling desk between. The monument may be from the studio of sculptor Cornelius Cure. The inscription reads:

Interred here in grave doth Thomas Arnwaye lye, who in his life tyme loved the poore & in that love did dye, for what he left to helpe the poore he did devise the same, not idell folke but such as woulde them selfs to goodnes frame, the thriftie peopell by his will that in this parishe dwell, fyvte [fifty] poundes for their comfort may have; if yt [that] they use it well, from yeare to yeare, if carefullie they looke unto their charge, of such men as this Arnways was God make the number large.
