Sir Thomas Hopton

Sir Thomas Hopton, politician, was buried in Westminster Abbey on 19th July 1638. Although he does not appear in the burial register a separate document in the Abbey archives shows that he was buried here, but the location is unknown and he has no gravestone or monument.

He was born about 1585, a son of Sir Arthur Hopton of Suffolk and his wife Rachel (Hall). After education at Oxford he entered Lincoln's Inn and travelled abroad. In 1622 he married Elizabeth Smythe and was knighted in 1633. He was Member of Parliament for Westbury in Wiltshire where his brothers had interests. He left his estate to his nephew Sir Ralph, son of his brother Robert.
