Sir Edward Knapp-Fisher

In the north cloister of Westminster Abbey is the grave of Sir Edward Knapp-Fisher, Receiver General of the Abbey from 1917-1938. The inscription reads: 

+Sir Edward Knapp-Fisher C.V.O. 1864-1940 Chapter Clerk, Receiver General and Custodian

He was a son of George Knapp-Fisher of London and his wife Elizabeth (Goodchild) and was born on 15th November 1864. Educated at Westminster School he became a solicitor of the firm of Knapp-Fisher and Son of Westminster. The Knapp part of his surname was assumed in 1900. He was secretary to the Governing Body of Westminster School from 1918-1940 and helped administer the Dean Ryle Fund for the restoration of the Abbey in 1920. His first wife was Winifred (d.1916) and his second Ethel Burgess. He was knighted in 1930. Hubert, his son, also attended Westminster School and was author of "Outline of World History for Boys and Girls" and other works. He married Joan Harrison and died in 1959. Sir Edward's nephew, Bishop Knapp-Fisher, became a Canon of Westminster.
