Major General and Mary Lowther

Major General Lowther (whose first name is not recorded in the register) was buried in the east cloister of Westminster Abbey on 22nd January 1746 aged 59 but has no marker. He was son of John Lowther (second son of Robert, Alderman of London), some time a merchant at Dantzic and later one of the Commissioners of the Revenue in Ireland, and his wife Mary. She was the daughter of Colonel John Lowther, of Lowther in Westmoreland (now Cumbria) by his first wife Elizabeth (Bellingham) and was buried on 23rd October 1724 in the east cloister, aged 73. (Her first husband was George Preston of Holker in Lancashire).  Mary's brother John Lowther, 1st Viscount Lonsdale, married Katherine Thynne (daughter of Sir Henry) in the Abbey on 3rd December 1674. (This John was a Member of Parliament and was created Viscount Lonsdale in 1696. He died in 1700 and is buried at Lowther).

The General died unmarried and his will, as of Axe Yard in Westminster, was proved by James Pearse whom he describes as "my dear brother and loving James Pearse of Arundell Street in the Strand". He also left an annuity to Margaret, wife of Matthew Draper, Lieutenant of Invalids and Town major of Berwick on Tweed, who took care of him.
