Beaupre Nowers

Beaupre Nowers, son of Francis (died 1670) and his wife Hester (Bargrave) (died 1700), has a wall memorial in the north aisle of St Margaret's church Westminster where he is buried. The burial register spells his name Boughney. His brother was Edward and his sisters Elizabeth and Anne. He was born in London and attended St Paul's school.

The inscription is a little difficult to read and the Latin can be translated:

Beaupre Nowers, M.A. Fellow of Christ's College in Cambridge; his father was Francis of Pluckley in Kent and his mother Hester, daughter of Isaac Bargrave D.D. Dean of Canterbury; he, if anyone, was quite outstanding for the sweetness of his disposition, the elegance of his conversation, the perfection of his talents, most well-versed in every refinement of virtue and learning. With all these [virtues], seeing that he seemed to intend yet greater things, he survived long enough for his own personal glory but not long enough for his friends and his country. He died on the 8th Nov. 1690 in the 25th year of his age. Depart, wayfarer: strive to emulate the distinguished youth of this man, rather than the obscure old age of others.

The cartouche has cherub heads and a winged skull at the base. The coat of arms shown is "argent, two bars gules in chief three crescents of the last".

His mother's will is at The National Archives.
